€18 million from MEDIA 2007 for project development

The new development support has been launched by the European Union's MEDIA 2007 Programme making 18 million euros available in non-repayable grants for European independent production companies.

The scheme helps producers invest in development of their fiction, animation and documentary projects thus making them stronger and more competitive before they enter production.  Support is available in the form of Single Project or Slate Funding.  Grants range from €10,000 - 190,000.  50% of the development budget must be raised by producers form other sources as matching funds.

The scheme, which has been available from Brussels in different versions since 1992, has undergone significant improvements to make it more user-friendly.  The amount of paperwork required has been reduced and there is no longer an obligation to repay the money on entry to production.

In the period from 2001 - 2006, over 200 UK companies made use of the MEDIA Development scheme and received 14,5 million euros.

First time ever MEDIA 2007 published a dedicated scheme for the development of online and offline interactive projects.  1,5 million euro has been earmarked for this area with grants of up to €100,000 for developing prototypes of computer and/or console games by European independent games developers.

Companies are advised to make contact with the UK MEDIA Desk or Antenna prior to filling the application form.  The MEDIA Desk and Antennae offer in-depth advice on preparation of an application and help to make the whole process more manageable.

The scheme is available for European companies with track record.  There are two deadlines: 15 november 2007 and 15 April 2008. To see the details of the schemes and to download the application forms click here.
